The largest US gold coin ever struck for circulation, the Gold Liberty was first minted in 1849 as a way for the federal government to use up some of the gold from the California Gold Rush. A portrait of Lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars (one for each of the original 13 states) is on the front, while the back shows a heraldic eagle and the denomination. The words "In God We Trust" were added after the Civil War in 1866.
