Remember the days when "silver" coins actually had silver in them with our 1964 John F. Kennedy Silver Proof Half Dollar 20-Coin Roll. It is been 40 years since U.S. coinage included silver and you get 20 of among the last minted - all in brilliant uncirculated proof condition. Each coin is constructed with 90% silver - that's approximately 1/3 ounce in each coin. The Kennedy half dollar replaced the Franklin silver half dollar in 1964, shortly after the President's assassination. His portrait is the same one as used by the U.S. Mint honoring Kennedy's inauguration, and it was personally approved by widow Jacqueline. The coin's first year was the only one in which it was minted of 90% silver due to rising costs of the metal. For the next five years, silver content was reduced to 40%. And then in 1970 it was completely removed, replaced by a copper-nickel composite. Each proof coin in this set was struck at least twice on highly polished coin blanks to bring out a mirrored background and high-relief images. The set was designed to enhance HSN #644693.
