1986 PR69 Statue of Liberty Half Dollar
See the majestic Statue of Liberty as if for the first time on this gorgeous Commemorative Half Dollar PR69 Coin. In 1986 the US Mint created this coin to commemorate the statue's 100th anniversary. It bears a face designed by Edgar Z. Steever IV, mint sculptor and engraver, featuring the sun rising over a 1913 New York City skyline with the Statue of Liberty welcoming an inbound ocean liner. The reverse was designed by engraver Sheri J. Winter. It pictures immigrants at Ellis Island waiting to go to New York. This particular specimen is signed by 33rd Director of the U.S. Mint Donna Pope. It is encapsulated in a clear acrylic holder to preserve its loveliness and condition and placed in a black velvet display case. The coin was struck at least twice under tremendous pressure to bring out gorgeous designs and mirror-like backgrounds. Regular coins are struck only once at normal pressure. Plus, a distinguishing cameo appearance is created by the contrast of a finely detailed frosted foreground against a shimmering background. When the half dollar was sold in 1986 it included a one-time surcharge that went directly to help the restoration of the statue and Ellis Island. A total of $83 million was raised and helped get the statue ready for its July 4, 1986, 100th anniversary celebration.
